1 Persuasive Essay Mrs. French English II

2 What is persuasive writing?  Expresses the writer’s opinions  Tries to get the audience to do what you want them to  Tries to make the audience think what you want them to think.

3 Your Job as the Author  Introduce the issue and state your opinion (claim)  Give three reasons to support your opinion (claim)  Wrap up your opinion in a conclusion

4 Introduction (1 st Part of the Essay)  One paragraph that opens your paper  Gets the reader’s attention  Gives background information or whatever you feel is needed  ENDS with claim (thesis statement):  The last sentence that expresses your opinion

5 CLAIM STATEMENT (THESIS STATEMENT)  Make sure this is a point you can support  Be able to tell three reasons why your claim is true  This is the last sentence of the introduction -- your paper must support this sentence

6 BODY (2 nd Part of the Essay)  Body of paper will have three reasons to support claim  Each reason will become the TOPIC SENTENCE for a paragraph

7 Your Three Reasons (BODY paragraphs)  State your reason  The rest of the paragraph will explain the reason (your comments).

8 Transitions  Use transition sentences or words to connect the paragraphs and make them flow smoothly  These are important

9 CONCLUSION 3 rd Part of an Essay  One paragraph  Summarizes the main ideas in your paper  Re-states your claim (thesis)-change wording, but keep meaning  Provides closure

10 FINISHING TOUCHES  Format the essay correctly  Proofread for grammar, mechanics, and spelling  Pay attention to spellcheck  Print a clean copy

11 ORGANIZING PARAGRAPHS Format #1  Begin with your weakest reason and end with your strongest one  Advantages?  Disadvantages?

12 ORGANIZING PARAGRAPHS Format #2  Begin with your strongest reason and end with your weakest reason  Advantages?  Disadvantages?

13 Which to Use?  Both are fine  Just NEVER have your main reason in the middle  Transition wording should make clear which you are using
