1 The exercise session © Pearson Publishing Tel 01223 350555

2 The exercise session There are three parts to an exercise session: Warm-up, 5-10 minutes — prepares the body mentally and physically for exercise Main activity, at least 35 minutes — improves fitness, skills or match performance Cool down, 5-10 minutes — gradually returns the body to its resting state to avoid muscle soreness

3 Why warm up? By warming up, the body systems, muscles and joints gradually become used to working harder This gradual increase of stress on the body reduces the risk of injury The pulse and body temperature are also gradually raised to nearer the work rate Concentrating on the warm-up focuses the mind and can lead to an advantage over the opposition by producing a better start to a match It increases blood flow to the muscles and removes stiffness
