PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF US AND CANADA

 Canada is the second largest country in the world, after Russia  It has more coastal land than any other country in world  Eastern Lowlands  Major cities like Halifax, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington DC are along the Atlantic Coast  The Appalachian Mountains run along this region  Interior Lowlands  In Canada this area wraps around the Hudson Bay  In the US it is considered the Great Plains  Much of this area is a prairie, a rolling inland grassland with fertile soil  This area also contains the Great Lakes region  Major cities include Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Ontario, and Ottawa MAJOR LANDFORMS

MAJOR LANDFORMS CONT.  Western Mountains and Plateaus  The Rocky Mountains run from Alaska all the way to New Mexico  The Rocky Mountains are the highest mountain range in North America. They are also younger than the Appalachians  Mount McKinley in Alaska is the highest peak in North America  This area also contains giant canyons and plateaus, most notably the Grand Canyon

BODIES OF WATER  Great Lakes  These lakes were formed by glaciers  Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario  These lakes flow into the St. Lawrence River  The Mississippi River  The longest river in North America  Major port cities are Memphis and St. Louis

 The high ridge of the Rockies is called the Continental Divide  Rivers east of the divide flow into either the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Mississippi River, or The Gulf of Mexico  Rivers west of the divide flow into the Pacific Ocean CONTINENTAL DIVIDE

 Texas has the most oil and natural gas reserves  Alaska also has huge reserves  The US uses around three times as much oil as it produces  Canada exports most of its oil to the US  Canada and the US also have huge amounts of coal  Minerals like gold, silver, and copper can be found in the Rocky Mountain region  The Great Plains region has some of the best soil in the world  Coastal regions are important for fishing  Timber is very abundant in both countries NATURAL RESOURCES

CLIMATE REGIONS

CLIMATE MAP  The Big Climate Debate  Describe your climate region  Name the big cities of your climate region  Name the outdoor activities one can do in your region

 Tornadoes  A windstorm in the shape of a funnel that touches the ground  The central United States has more tornadoes than any other place on Earth  This area is called Tornado Alley  Hurricanes  These are windstorms that begin over warm oceans  Hurricane season is usually from July to September  They mostly strike the southeastern Atlantic and around the Gulf of Mexico  One of the most damaging hurricanes was Hurricane Katrina 2005 SEVER WEATHER

 Blizzards  A severe wind storm in snowy areas  They can cause “white out” conditions  They can completely halt activity in the affected region  Earthquakes and Volcanoes  Happen around tectonic plate boundaries  The west coast is the most affected area in North America  Draughts  Draughts are extended periods of hot, dry weather with little to no rainfall  They are most detrimental in the Great Plains region  The most devastating draught happened during the 1930s MORE SEVERE WEATHER
