4 What are Adjectives? Picture a car in your mind. Do you have an image in your head? Now make it red.

8 Pick a secret object (person or thing) in the room. Write a list of words that describes this object. Use your five senses!

9 An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. An adjective answers: What kind? Which one? How many? How much? Example: happy dog that boy seven girls enough money

16 Location of Adjectives Adjectives can be located in three places in a sentence. 1. Most common location is directly in front of the noun it is modifying. Ex. the big dog, the new toy 2. Location #2 is after a linking verb or verb. Ex. The game was interesting. 3. Location #3 occurs after a noun when it is set off by commas. Ex. The book, well-written and suspenseful, kept my interest.

17 Articles = Adjectives Articles: a - refers to any noun –Example: Please hand me a cup of flour. an – refers to any noun that begins with a vowel –Example: Please hand me an egg. the – refers to a specific noun –Example: Please hand me the cup of flour and the egg.

18 Proper Adjectives An adjective that is formed from a proper noun. Proper adjectives, like proper nouns, are capitalized. Proper adjectives, like proper nouns, are specific. Examples: – I enjoy Italian cuisine. Italian (proper adjective)  Italy (proper noun) – Capricorn Anderson worshiped at a Buddhist shrine. Buddhist (proper adjective)  Buddha (proper noun)
