3 A Blend of Many Cultures
Brazilians culture includes: Brazils Official Language: Portuguese European, African, Asian, and Indian influence. Why are they a blend of cultures and not just Brazilian? Religions: Roman Catholic and Candromble, which is a mix of African and Catholic religious practices.

4 A Diverse Population Africans Native Brazilians
Around 6 million Indians lived in Brazil before the Portuguese arrived. Today, only 700,000 Indians live in Brazil in the Amazon Rainforest The Brazil government set up reservations to protect the Indians in the Amazon, but as more people use resources from the rainforest, more tribes are at risk. What other event in history does this sound like? After slavery ended, slaves escaped to northern regions similar to the living conditions in Africa and set up quilombos, an African word for housing. African’s created the national food, feijoada a bean stew, and also had an influence in the arts and music of Brazil.

5 A Diverse Population Europeans Asians
Brazil was viewed as a place of wealth by Europeans. This made many Europeans want to move to invest in the coffee industry. Most people of European ancestry live in the Southern part of the country Many Japanese immigrants began coming over to Brazil to work on the coffee or tea farms. After World War II, more Japanese immigrants came over. Today, Brazil has the largest Japanese population other than Japan.

6 Architecture and Art A blend of modern and traditional cultures
Traditional Art- Pottery, baskets, and jewelry.

7 Music Brazilian music is a blend of African, European, and Indian cultures. Samba- most famous form of Brazilian music Cuica- a friction drum to create samba rhythms Samba!

8 Bossa Nova- a mix of the samba beat with the sounds of jazz
Dance link Bossa Nova! Bossa Nova- a mix of the samba beat with the sounds of jazz Samba- Reggae- a popular form of music based on African drum traditions Capoeira- a combination of dance and martial arts created during slavery in Brazil by the African slaves.

9 Carnival Every year for four days before the season of Lent, the holiday combines a Roman Catholic festival with several African celebrations and includes parades and street parties Carnival

11 Create a one paragraph (5-7 sentences) history about your own culture.
Now its your turn…. Create a one paragraph (5-7 sentences) history about your own culture. You can write it in the form of a letter, a story or a poem. Think of what your life is like: What foods do you eat, what traditions do you have, what sports do you play, etc. The goal is that you inform future generations of your family about your own cultural customs today! Illustrate with a picture. Page 218: Daniel Munduruku Story Telling Question: How is story telling important to your culture? Think of stories that your own family members might have told you that were passed down from generation to generation.
