2 E.g.: I was at home last night. She got up at ten last Sunday. They watched a soccer game yesterday. The Simple Past Tense is used to talk about events and actions that happened at a definite time in the past. SIMPLE PAST TENSE * Some signal words of the Simple Past are: last night / month / week, yesterday, two weeks ago...

3 AFFIRMATIVE FORM Look at the chart. PERSONAL PRONOUNVERBS I YOU HE SHE IT WE YOU THEY played

4 E.g.: WATCH – WATCHED PLAY – PLAYED WORK – WORKED There are some verbs which are called REGULAR VERBS. SIMPLE PAST TENSE All of them end in “ED” in the past form.

5 Verbs ending in “Y” preceeded by a consonant -Y + IED E.g. John studied hard yesterday. SIMPLE PAST TENSE * Depending on the verb, it’s added “IED”.

6 SIMPLE PAST TENSE There are other verbs which are called IRREGULAR VERBS, because they don’t follow any rules. Each one is different from the other. E.g. go – went eat – ate

12 E.g.: John didn’t have a pet when he was a kid. We didn’t watch TV yesterday. I didn’t see my friend at school this morning. SIMPLE PAST TENSE * When DIDN’T is used in the sentence, the verb remains in its base form. * DIDN’T is used with all Personal Pronouns. The auxiliary always comes before the verb. In the negative form, it’s necessary to use the auxiliary DIDN’T.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE * In the interrogative form, it’s necessary to use the auxiliary DID. * When DID is used, the verb remains in its base form. * DID is used with all Personal Pronouns. * The auxiliary always comes before the subject.
