2 © Lenka Lexová Introduction  the official name is the Commonwealth of Australia  it's a country in the Southern Hemisphere including the mainland Australia, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans  it's the world's smallest continent largest island  it's the world's smallest continent but largest island  the capital city is Canberra, the largest city is Sydney  the population is around 21 million  the currency is Australian dollar  Aborigines  the native people are called Aborigines

4 Geography  it has got an area of 7,617,930 km 2 and lies on the Indo- Australian Plate  the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef, lies a short distance off the north-east coast and extends for over 2,000 kilometres  Australia is the flattest continent, Mount Kosciuszko (2,228) in the Great Dividing Range is the highest mountain  the longest rivers are the Darling and the Murray  Lake Eyre  there aren´t too many big lakes except in the state of South Australia, e.g. Lake Eyre  the western part of Australia is covered by deserts (the Great Victoria Desert, the Great Sandy Desert etc.)‏  the largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid land called the outback

5 © Lenka Lexová Climate  in the most northern areas there´s the tropical zone therefore there are tropical rainforests  western and middle parts of Australia are covered by deserts and semi-deserts with a little rain and high temperatures  in the south there's mild climate  the winter season takes place during June – August, Christmas is celebrated in the middle of the summer season  in the summer there are often terrible fires

6 © Lenka Lexová Population  the population density is very low, the majority of people live along the south-eastern coastline  they´re descendants of mainly British origin  the native Aborigines origi- nate from Polynesia  there live many immigrants from Asian countries

8 © Lenka Lexová History  the first Europeans in Australia were the Dutch in the 17th century (Willem Janszoon, 1606), but they did not settle there  in 1770 James Cook mapped the east coast of Australia, which he named New South Wales and claimed for England  penal colony and first settlements were founded by prisoners  the country became British penal colony and first settlements were founded by prisoners  in 1901 The Commonwealth of Australia was born and the country became an independent dominion of Britain
