The Writing Process and Five Paragraph Essay

Brainstorming First, you will think about a topic you want to write about. Write down some ideas and then pick the one that interests you the most. Next, you will write key words about your topic. The following sheet is where you put down these key words. You will also decide on a thesis statement for your paper. Write it on the graphic organizer.

The Graphic Organizer Topic Main Idea 1 Main Idea 2 Main Idea 3 Example 1 Example 3 Example 2 Example 3 Example 2 Example 1 Example 3 Example 2 Example 1 Thesis Statement: Explicitly identifies the purpose of the paper.

The 5 Paragraph Essay Rough Draft Outline The following sheet will be where you change your key words into sentences for your paper. It is broken down into each paragraph. The motivator should catch the reader’s attention. Maybe begin with a question. The thesis statement tells what the purpose of your paper is. The blue print briefly lists your three main ideas.

5 Paragraph Essay Rough Draft Outline Topic: ___________________________________________ Paragraph 1 Motivator: _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Thesis Statement: _______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Blue Print: _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 Main Idea 1: ___________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 1: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 2: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 3: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 3 Main Idea 2: ___________________________________________________________________ Example 1: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 2: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 3: _______________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________

Paragraph 4 Main Idea 3: ___________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 1: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 2: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Example 3: ____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 5 Closing Statement: ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Restate Thesis: _________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Clincher: ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________

The closing statement should conclude or wrap up what you want to say. Restate thesis means that you restate the thesis in different words. The clincher is similar to the motivator. It should leave your reader with some sort of new insight to make them think. Never lose your focus of the paper.

Rough Draft This is when you will transfer your sentences from the outline paper onto lined paper. You will use transition words to smoothly change paragraphs. You should double space your rough draft because this is the step when you will reread your essay and make corrections. Maybe a classmate or teacher will edit it for you. Double spacing will allow room for the editor to indicate corrections.

Final Copy Once you have edited your paper it is time for you to finally transfer the essay onto a nice white sheet of paper in your best handwriting or typed on the computer.
